Review: Blotto, Twinks and the Bootlegger’s Moll

We just had to share this fabulous review of Blotto, Twinks and the Bootlegger’s Moll, which will appear in a forthcoming issue of Suspense Magazine:

Author Simon Brett should be congratulated, because this book #4, is even more entertaining and engaging than all the Blotto & Twinks that have come before.

This time out, the Dowager Duchess of the family has decided that the only way to take care of the hardships at Tawcester Towers, including finding a way to get money in order to keep the place up, is to marry off her younger son, the Honourable Devereux Lyminster (commonly known as Blotto), to a super-rich American.

This is the Prohibition era in the United States, and Blotto, along with his sister the Lady Honoria Lyminster (AKA Twinks), are sent by the Duchess to gangster-filled Chicago in order for Blotto to meet what will become his fiancée. Along with Chauffeur Corky Froggett, the stunning siblings board the ocean liner, SS His Majesty, and set sail for America.

It’s not exactly a happy trip, considering Blotto feels like he has been condemned to death, knowing that waiting for him in Chicago is a very wealthy heiress by the name of Mary Chapstick. Of course, crime also becomes an element of their Chicago journey when Twinks discovers that the father of Blotto’s future wife has a father by the name of Hiram P. Chapstick, III who is up to his ears in a bootlegging operation run by a notorious Chicago mobster.

Filled with the detectives and the ‘families’ with great names who carry violin cases all over the city loaded with machine guns that made ‘Prohibition USA’ both scary and funny, this author puts forward a fantastic tale. Although the reader will long for more, the stories of British Aristocrats and the Chicago mob versus the law are great fun!

Twinks is, as always, a mite smarter than her brother, and whether or not Blotto becomes a ‘taken’ man is a plotline you really want to dive right into.
